What is CyberMentors?

CyberMentors is a website that uses a social networking model to allow young people to mentor each other, particularly around the issues of bullying and cyberbullying.

Below is a list of the people that you will see on the website, so you understand what they all do. This list will also help you to understand who we are referring to in this document.

You” means you! You should be a young person between the ages of 11 and 18 who has logged on to the website to get help with bullying or to chat about something that is upsetting you.

"CyberMentors"are the young people who volunteer to chat to you on the website, offering you their support and assistance. Unlike counsellors who are professionals at giving advice, CyberMentors are young people just like you.

Senior CyberMentors” are ordinary CyberMentors, who are slightly older and more experienced than CyberMentors. They are normally between 17 and 25. However, they are not professional counsellors.

Moderators” are adults working for Beatbullying who are trained to work in the chat room to make sure everybody sticks to the site rules .

Counsellors” are professional counsellors, which means that they are experienced adults with plenty of knowledge about helping you to deal with bullying and other issues that may be troubling you. Counsellors work for Beatbullying – some of them are paid by Beatbullying and some of them volunteer for Beatbullying. Counsellors are online from 8am til 2am in the morning.

We”means Beatbullying (the charity providing you with CyberMentors and this website).

“Website” means the website that you are currently logged onto (cybermentors.org.uk).

Every time you see one of these words on this page, you can simply look at the list above to see what they mean.

What if there aren’t enough CyberMentors for you to talk to when you log on?

We will try our best to provide enough CyberMentors to offer you help, support and assistance whenever you log on to the website. Sometimes, perhaps early in the morning or late at night, there may not be enough CyberMentors available for you to chat to.

If there is no CyberMentor available to chat you can post a secret message to a counsellor using the TAP function . Your secret message can say anything you want and you can use it to set up another time to chat with a CyberMentor. Your secret message will be responded to as soon as possible.

We are not responsible for any harm that you may suffer if there is no CyberMentor available to give you immediate online support. If you need help in an emergency, there is a list of organisations  on the website that you can get in touch with.

The role of the CyberMentors

All CyberMentors and Senior CyberMentors have been given training by Beatbullying so that they can help and support you, but you must understand that they:

·        are volunteers

·        are not qualified to provide professional advice

·        cannot recommend or advise you on taking any specific course of action

All conversations that you have with our CyberMentors and Senior CyberMentors are confidential , but they may notify a counsellor about what you say to them if they are worried about your safety. The counsellor may step in if they feel it is necessary and talk with you directly.

Mentoring outside of the website

You must not chat to or receive help from a CyberMentor or Senior CyberMentor outside the website. This is because we can only monitor your conversations on the website – we are not responsible for any harm you may come to as a result of any conversations outside of the website. You may, of course, chat to a CyberMentor face-to-face in your school, if you have the CyberMentors programme at your school.

Beatbullying’s responsibility

It is our responsibility to make sure the website is as safe as it possibly can be. Beatbullying and the CyberMentors are not responsible for anything that happens to you as a result of using the website or as a result of acting on any advice given to you by a CyberMentor, Senior CyberMentor or counsellor on the website.
